Wednesday, December 03, 2008 | excited | Lord of the Rings Online (PC) | The Council
Since re-forming The Council a few weeks ago (currently rank 8) we have added some pretty amazing people, all of whom are proactive and supportive. We now have a teamspeak clan server (The Council) and continue to move forward. We are still looking for a few more officers to fill our ranks and plan to start open in-game recruitment in the next couple weeks.

In the end our unique kinship experience of being role-based and storyboarded will fill a gaming void for many players. Instead of a kinship based on followers or so casual to the point of being inert, The Council will provide quantifiable support and in a very fundamental way expand every members gaming experience.
Sunday, October 05, 2008 | excited | Lord of the Rings Online (PC) | The Council
I have been an avid MMO gamer since Diablo and UO. I started my first kin, Starshadow, in Ultima Online with some other dice dealers at the Rio.

Our plan was simple, a casual guild that was more then just a friend in-game but rather one which would consist of quality people eager to proactively promote its members from the ground up. Every one of us took an active role in the welfare and prosperity of each and ever member. We did not just make that claim, we made it part and parcel to how we organized the guild. Members were appointed to specific roles that involved class mentoring, quest completion, world lore etc. Beyond the titles earned, these members were given a specific criteria to fulfill and expectations to be met. Our members wanted and reveled in these roles and of course the larger guild benefited immensely.

Our specific brand, some vocal leaders and a hyper active calendar helped us to grow to more then 320+ unique players and quickly become one of the largest guilds on our server.

Then came EQ, Asherons Call, Dark Age of Camelot, Eve, COH, WOW and others. Over the years we became a guild spanning 12 games, 17 servers and 18 official guild entities. We counted some 4000 unique members and supported one of the most active guild sites within the MMO space. On WOW alone we had 4 separate guilds on 3 servers covering both factions and so numerous we exceeded the guild tabs ability to track members. Within Asherons Call our nearly 1200 members on Harvestgain alone represented over 10% of the server and of course we had a presence on 3 other servers.

Over the years our core ideology remained the same and most of our real changes were dictated by the reality of each world as opposed to any internal problems. The more we grew the better we were organized. Most Starshadow guilds were headed by leaders appointed or accepted by our central or “Inner Council”. Some Starshadow guilds were simply started by miscreants looking to exploit our good reputation and branding. Many of these same leaders even claimed to be me.

Through it all we were a bonafide success attracting the attention of gaming companies and hardware developers. At one point our guild site was posting 100k unique hits per month with more then 7k registered members and $500 per month in corporate sponsorships with dozens of free product disbursements such as Microsoft Sidewinders which were given to all of our Inner Council members for word-of-mouth advertising.

After nearly 10 years of relative stability we finally met our slow and sad demise. I should add that even now Starshadow lives on, quietly perpetuated by small groups in various games with a few leaders with ties to the past but mostly made up of people who have little knowledge of our storied history.

Among my many mistakes there were a few that ultimately led to our disintegration, my retirement and ultimately the end of any central organization.

For one, I never took my own leadership role that seriously. After all we were playing games and I just did not recognize how emotional this gaming connection was for so many people. I was happy giving each guild autonomy as long as they respected and incorporated our special brand of guilding. Given our success this was always an easy sell. We were a nicely wrapped package.

My 2nd big mistake and some would argue my biggest problem in general is my constant desire to micro-manage every level of the guild. Yes we had plenty of people to do various tasks but I always wanted to be in the mix. I am not the type of person to take anything for granted. In fact a good part of what I considered fun was having some type of presence in nearly every game we played. There were days when I would log-in and participate in 5-10 different game worlds in a single day. When I was basically stuck in my house for periods of disability, this level of virtual activity gave me purpose and provided me with a social life that I would not have had otherwise. (I participated in the film Avatars Offline to highlight the benefits that come from virtual socialization for people with disabilities if you are interested in learning more visit avatarsoffline.com)

And what I consider my own worst mistake was changing the brand and succumbing to the “success” of World of Warcraft. It was at a time of weakness and like so many millions was completely captivated by the grind and simplicity of a brilliantly executed world. We started off simply enough with a few dozen people from other Starshadow games. We focused completely on our brand and organization. It was apparent to most of us right away that WOW offered little in terms of community development and immersion. There were no houses, no kin halls, no purpose for taverns, no guild rewards or accomplishments, basically nothing that emphasized the “WE” over “ME”. Instead WOW brought the loot, the battles, the quests and a brightly colored ...

Q. How do you feel about selling virtual items for real money? (Do NOT advertise RMT services!) (Answer!)
A. Kills the in-game economy and impedes character development for the vast majority of people who do not buy or sell items outside the game. Game economies with rampant external forces are subject to micro-inflationary pricing that puts critical items out of reach for most people and reduces secondary market demands which tend to be the mainstay of genuine crafter's attempts to market their wares and make a profit. (I play LOTRO as a reference).

Q. Are you interested in working within the game industry? (Answer!)
A. I have worked as an in-game guide, this is probably the extent of my desires to work in the game industry.

Q. What sort of players annoy you the most? (Answer!)
A. Im not a big fan of people that use the MMO space as a glossy chat channel to convey their RL issues. I login to escape RL for a few hours at a time and cant be bothered to see it in global chat. I dont mind it within the context of a personal conversation or from a group/kin member but i hate to be forced to listen. I am also not a fan of the punk hard core gamer who has no patience and sees every other person within the game as a means to his own ends.

Q. If you could cancel any online game, which would it be? (Answer!)
A. I would have to stay almost any game by Sony. While I like the games themselves, Sony is responsible for all of my own worst customer experiences online. Its near impossible to get a real person to give you any level of support and even then its some small generic answer that does nothing to resolve your problem. I loved EQ and even EQ2 but thank god I never got stuck. I had a friend who got stuck within lower Guk when 50 was the level cap. It took a GM 2 days to respond to his que and by that time his body had poofed. They wanted to help in the end but he decided to quit and I lost one of my best friends.

Q. What do your characters and avatars usually look like? (Answer!)
A. I usually go for the anti-hero look. My minstrel on LOTRO wears a fishing outfit and my Captain wears a rare but simple robe with no shoes, no gloves and no helm. Most of my toons look the part of recent arrivals. I would rather avoid the fanfare and questions that come from wearing some uber item set. For a reason yet unknown my Captain was just awarded the title of Cabon the Fashionable. Perhaps its missing a "UN"?

Q. In real life, are you male or female? (Answer!)
A. Male

Q. What mods do you play with? (Answer!)
A. None, I try to stick to in-game mechanics. I used quite a few mods in WOW that complimented raid and guild dynamics but it was always such a hassle on patch day. AC, my favorite game of all time, is also heavily dependent on mods. Im not sure you can actually play AC without mods at this point, there is just way too much content to cope without them. I like to keep it simple and keep my game time just that, for gaming.

Q. Other than your console or PC, what is the piece of hardware you can't live without? (Answer!)
A. I would have to say my laptop and 2nd computer for running quest or item searches while playing. I play mostly a support role now that I'm basically done with levels for a while. Having a 2nd puter fired up definitely helps my endeavors.

Q. What question would you add to the Attitudes system? (Answer!)
A. Id be interested to see something related to end-game motivations and relationships with guilds relative to that motivation.

Q. What do you love or hate about PVP? (Answer!)
A. I hate corpse or spawn camping. Why bother play if thats the only way you can earn kills. I also hate pvp dynamics that are too closely tied to PVE in terms of developing ill will. I love that LOTRO has 1 side that is essentially anonymous and each side cannot understand the others verbal taunts. This keeps focused on the kills and away from any emotional connections that could hinder their overall gameplay.

Q. Ninjas or pirates? (Answer!)
A. Pirates

Q. Do you use voice chat? (Answer!)
A. Yes, and I have a microphone

Q. When you are not playing games, what do you do for fun? (Answer!)
A. I spend time with my son doing anything physical to make up for times spent sitting on my ass. I read a lot of fantasy and sci fi. I am also an avid coin collector.

Q. What sort of tools (calculators, builders, spreadsheets, etc.) do you use to plan your characters? (Answer!)
A. I mostly just use a spreadsheet that i developed for LOTRO allowing me to compare equipment sets and trade off items to see their effects.

Q. What are your favorite tabletop (RPG, board, miniatures, etc.) games? (Answer!)
A. I was a huge AD&D fan some years ago. Me and my son play some chess, checkers, stratego, Axis and Allies and even a Lord of the Rings box set.

Q. What are your most memorable achievements in a game? (Answer!)
A. As Del Cabon in Asherons Call I was the first person to reach level 100. This is probably the benchmark that I am most recognized for. I would say that my own most memorable milestone was reaching the 10 year mark with Starshadow starting in Ultima Online and continuing through World of Warcraft. At our height we had numerous commercial sponsorships, nearly 4000 active members across 12 different MMO games. I retired from Starshadow back in 2006, but its still in my blood and I am back now (with the right game, lotro) looking for a few partners to realize a new future. You can check out my recent guild post on gamerdna.

Q. What is the most memorable flamewar you can remember? (Answer!)
A. I was once flamed quite a bit on the Vault AC forums for my ability to clean out a certain dungeon and effectively eliminating it as an adventuring option for others. Of course I never participated in these forums and did not know that my actions were viewed so negatively. When I read them i quit that dungeon and looked elsewhere for exp.

Q. Where did you get your gaming names from? (Answer!)
A. My primary gaming name of Del Cabon originated from my pen and paper character some 25 years ago. This original character was a neutral evil bounter hunter and it was meant as a loose take on the spanish "the devil" or "the demon".

Q. What music do you like to play games to? (Answer!)
A. Whatever music the game provides. Im not the biggest music fan. My radio pre-sets and CD compilations are more mood based covering quite a few genres from pop, to classical, to classic rock and some rap.

Q. Why do you join guilds or clans? (Answer!)
A. This is a hard question for me to put in this little box. My primary motivations however are to mentor, assist and provide support. I still enjoy levelling my toons but most of my idea of fun come from working cooperatively and meeting goals as a team. I have a fairly extensive post regarding my guild motivations on my gamerdna forums for The Council.

Q. What are the specs on your gaming rig? (Answer!)
A. I game on my latest Toshiba laptop. It has 4gb of memory an 8700 card and 500gb of disk space. My other 2 systems have lower specs and are used more for 2 boxxing as needed or as reference tools while gaming.

Q. What experience do you have beta-testing games? (Answer!)
A. I have beta-tested UO, AC, AC2, DAOC, DDO, SWG, WOW and Lord of the Rings Online. I have been invited to test a few others, especially at the height of Starshadow as a guild but failed to login. The guild was invited to beta Vanguard but the file was so huge we finally just gave up and passed out the code to other members who were interested.

Q. What is your first computer or video gaming memory? (Answer!)
A. My first RPG game was Wizardry. My first signs of addiction came from playing the Ultima PC games. My most vivid memory of Wizardry was the computer encounter sounds and box rendering. In Ultima I can still sort of remember my efforts to complete all of the Avatar quests.

Q. Do your quiz results on GamerDNA reflect your personality, and if not, what did it get wrong? (Answer!)
A. They seem pretty accurate. Ever since taking your test I am completely sold on the website. Im not one for taking time out from gaming to post much of anything other then on a guild site but this site is very well executed and relevant. I think it will become a mainstay for gamers in the future.

Q. Beside GamerDNA, what are your favorite websites? (Answer!)
A. MMORPG.com is one of my other frequently visited gaming websites in tersm of news. I have been involved with so many MMO's over the years, its fun to see how they continue to change and thrive. I used to enjoy Allakhazam as an EQ player but as an LOTRO reference it seems fairly weak.

Q. What is a feature you would like added to GamerDNA? (Answer!)
A. It would be nice for the guild site to support a "who is playing now" meter for LOTRO. I am not sure if this possible but it was a nice utility on our WOW guild site. Another feature I would love to see is voice chat server that could be used independently of the in-game chat that is available now. We use ventrillo or skype now but it would be great to have everything guild related in 1 place. Lastly perhaps some type of built in DKRP system that could be customized and tied to event registration and completion.

Q. Have you ever had a memorable real-life meeting with other gamers? (Answer!)
A. Living in Vegas I have been able to attend a few FanFaires for both DAOC and Sony games. At each I have met a few guild mates. I have also hosted some guild members over the years and helped them with comps and discounted rates here in Vegas. I was in the gaming business for almost 13 years.

Q. What are your thoughts on roleplaying in games? (Answer!)
A. I was featured in the movie Avatars Offline which examined gaming from the perspective of famous gamers, game developers and industry outsiders who have criticized gaming on various levels. While gaming has its downside in terms of the time commitment and potential to strain relationships and even real job expectations it also has some incredible positives. In my case I was disabled and home bound for nearly 8 years, the start of which was filled with depression. Before my accident I was an extremely extroverted person and craved social interaction. Gaming gave me a positive outlet and a connection to the world that helped my path to recovery. See avatarsoffline.com for more information.

Q. If you made your own game, what would it be like? (Answer!)
A. I would mix in the following; The depth, free range and npc scripting of Morrowind, the content and lore of LOTRO and Asherons Call, the item relationships and crafting relevance of Asherons Call the community of Asherons Call the guild management screen and customization of EQ2 the enterprise housing and town building potential of UO the vendor hiring and placement of DAOC the combat mechanics and RVR of DAOC the critical hits animations of AOC. the avatar customization level of City of Heroes the dungeon mechanics and innovations of DDO the atmosphere and vividness of World of Warcraft maybe throw in a few EVE developers to challenge our brains

Q. When do you play, including timezone? (Answer!)
A. late nights (pacific) typically and weekends.

Q. What is the most overlooked or misunderstood game? (Answer!)
A. I personally think Asherons Call is by far the best game every built. It is really the most complete game in MMO space and will probably always hold that title (imo). If you started today you could never finish, ever. AC meets the needs of every gamer, completely. Balanced PVP, PVE content that never ends, questing that you could never finish and many quests that are way outside the box and really demonstrate just how innovative and creative developers can ever be. The community is also older and much more supportive, etc. etc. If not for the graphics and reliance on third part mods, Id be back in AC today.

Q. If you could bring any book, movie or comic to life in a game, which would you choose? (Answer!)
A. Other then the Hobbit and Fellowship by Tolkein, the whole Drizzt series by RA Salvatore within Baldurs Gate.

Q. If you could meet any game developer, who would it be? (Answer!)
A. Lord British of UO fame.

Q. What are your thoughts on player-made mods/addons for games? (Answer!)
A. They have their uses although I wish developers would set up some standardization for modders like Dreamweaver has with their Exchange. Its such a pain keeping them updated with game patches and they can quickly turn into a nightmare.

Q. Do you feel relationships within games are meaningful? (Answer!)
A. On some levels yes. I have had a very bad personal experience in the past with a seriously misguided gamer who showed up at my door. Its one thing to develop a relationship through a game and then take it to a different level through other offline mediums but to assume that an in-game marriage translates to the real world with no other supporting context is a whole other level of crazy. I have developed some great friendships through gaming that have translated to RL.

Q. How do you feel about playing characters of the opposite sex? (Answer!)
A. I can respect people that play other sexes but its not for me. I identify with my character in-game and play them as an extension of my own ideals. I feel like I am being disingenuous playing a female not to mention that I just cant seem to identify with that role.

Q. Have you ever had a romantic encounter with someone you met in a game? (Answer!)
A. Only some crazy lady who showed up at my door after we were married in game as part of a role playing event for my guild. I will give her props for being attractive physically but I was too nervous that she was gonna hack me up. I cant see myself having a romantic relationship with someone I met in-game although nothing is impossible.

Q. What are the proper uses of tank guns and bubblegum? (Answer!)
A. I'm more of a fantasy gamer sans tanks and bubble gum. Even the rifles in WOW always gave me pause.

Q. How many hours a week do you play? (Answer!)
A. 10-20
