I have a lot of friends who play all sorts of games. I get game recommendations from them all the time. Naturally, MMO players recommend MMO's and FPS players recommend FPS games and... da da da. But there's one game they've all told me I HAVE to play. One game they all tell stories about with excitement. One game they all make obscure references to - cake, cubes, etc. "You haven't played Portal yet!" is always how the conversation starts. A "No" is most often met with a shameful "And you call yourself a gamer?" look upon their faces.

Well guess what - I can now call myself a gamer again. I've played, I've concoured (it's a pretty short game) and I now understand that shameful look. Concept-wise, it's one of the most simple games I've ever played. Execution-wise... it's simply brilliant. Convention-wise - it breaks molds. If you haven't played do yourself a flavor and get the game, block out 3 to 5 hours and simply enjoy.

That's what she said... what? Wait - no. That doesn't even make sense.

These pics will make more sense. I thought I would share my gaming glory.

MacBook Pro Running Windows. COD4 - almost full tilt.

What did you say.... can't play what on Mac? :)

In the midst of the dot.com era I was working as a UI designer for New York Times Digital. As a means to inspire new creative ways of engaging our members we decided to spend some of our "education" budget on a trip to E3 in Los Angeles to have a look at all the latest developments in game UI's. It was May 2000 and I remember my only real goal was to get a good look at this game called Halo. Well, I got that look, I was certainly impressed, but the real lasting experience I had at E3 happened when I stopped by the DUES EX booth. I spoke at length with the producer and lead designer, Warren Spector, about the mechanics, what drove the story-line and what propelled the involved experience of being an active participant in the game. The conversation changed the way I looked at games and their entertainment value and it sparked my deep interest in games in general. Needless to say I played DUES EX over and over and the game style remains as the type I enjoy most - tactical story-line driven first person shooters.

StarCraft 2 | Anticipating

"Starcraft was my first RPG and I really enjoyed it. I've had my eyes on the next installment and I must say that I'm pretty damn excited to play."

Gears of War 2 | Anticipating

"This looks HOT HOT HOT!!! Can't wait to "Get Twitchy with it!""

FEAR | Anticipating

"I haven't played but my boys (colleagues) tell me it was revolutionary. I'm not surprised - Waren Spector is "The Man"."

Far Cry 2 | Anticipating

"Loved Crysis and Far Cry 2 looks even more stellar. Gime gime!!!"

Battlefield 1942

"I played this game a ton. Battlefield 2 is just such an improvement that I haven't touched the original in ages."

Battlefield 2

"Lot's o' fun! I seem to enjoy myself every time I go back to this game. Although I do get really annoyed with some of the server game play - spawn squatters and the like."

Guild: Alphatroop

Characters & Screen Names: Alphadoque
Battlefield 2142

"Similar to BF2 - although I like BF2 more for some reason. I do love the vehicles in this one though. I have to say - I still find the game play in the Battlefield series a little clunky and in need of some refinement."

Characters:

Alphadoque, — My one and only :) I get pretty beat-up when I play online. I'm in need of a good Clan to romp with I suppose.

Bioshock

"Beautiful environment and truly creepy characters. I found the goal oriented game-play a bit monotonous though - and I never finished. I did enjoy it for a while though."

Call of Duty 2

"I think the gameplay in the COD series is one of the best. I'll always play some version of COD - as I know they'll keep making 'em."

Characters & Screen Names: Alphadoque
Call of Duty 4

"Love it! The game seems to be taking cues from motion pictures. A good introduction set the hook and the games got me. I felt like I was a part of the story-line right from the beginning which may me feel invested in the game and finishing it - of wh"

Crysis

"Dang! My fav FPS-SPC to date. The graphics are beautiful and super-realistic helping me become more immersed in the gaming experience. I really enjoy the concepts but I would have liked the freedom to make more of my own choices throughout the game."

Characters & Screen Names: Nomad
Deus Ex

"I met Warren Spector at e3 in 1999 and he explained to me some of the new approaches he took in developing the game play for Dues Ex. Inspired to play - I loved every minute of it."

Enemy Territory

"The game trailer sucked me in... and $50 later I was pretty disappointed. Nothing new in this game and the graphics are pretty standard."

Characters:

Alphadoque, — Alphadoque didn't show his face online too much and when he did he got clobbered. Same-old PVP-FPS arena style play - veterans going-to-town on the newbies.

Grand Theft Auto: Vice City

"This was the first GTA game I played. It sure made an initial "impression" and once I got over the stupid fun of running people over and beating the living daylights out every car i could get my hands on - I found following the story line to be a lot"

GRID

"Best car racing game I've ever played. Looks and sounds amazing, the cars are incredible, the terain is super and there's a good number of different kinds of racing to choose from. All around A++. I'd recommend this game to anyone."

Half-Life 2

"My new favorite game. I really enjoy being involved in an interesting story-line when I play FPS's and this has definitely got that."

Characters & Screen Names: Gordon Freeman!
Halo

"Saw this game at E3 in 2000 and could barely wait for it's release. What a full and exciting experience playing this game."

Halo 3

"Played this on the XBOX. I enjoyed playing the game. There were moments I thought it was incredible but there were also moments where I thought the game design copped out. I also had a bit of a difficult time following the story line. Also, the game "

Need For Speed: PRO STREET

"One of my first XBOX 360 purchaes. I hadn't played a racoing game in sooo long. I fogto how much "simple" fun it could be. Actually, you can have plenty of simple fun in Pro Street but there's a lot of feature that make it far less than simple. I hav"

Portal

"What an interesting and coimpletely enjoyable game. Kina changes your perspective of hat a "game" could be."

Rock Band

"So much fun. Music really is something that connects us all - and if you've ever walked in on a group of people playing this game you'd agree."

StarCraft

"The only RTS I've really ever fully enjoyed."

Team Fortress 2

"Soooo much fun. I love the simplicity and the character (class) driven gameplay. There's a level of comedy that I really enjoy in the game as well."

Characters & Screen Names: Heavy is the man!
Unreal Tournament

"LAN party's rule!"

Warhammer Online: Age of Reckoning

"Best trailer for a game I've ever seen. Time to see how the game play stacks up!"

Q. What do your characters and avatars usually look like? (Answer!)
A. I like to associate the look of my avatar with my game-play. It helps me identify with the player more - allowing me to become more immersed in the gaming experience.

Q. When do you play, including timezone? (Answer!)
A. Mostly in the evenings - sometimes into the early morning (EST).

Q. What is your first computer or video gaming memory? (Answer!)
A. Pong - seriously. As a Christmas gift my father sent my brother, sister and myself what we thought was a small black and white TV. In the box were 2 joy-sticks (we had never seen anything like it). We plugged in the monitor, figured out how to hook the joysticks in, flipped the switch and bingo - PONG!

Q. What music do you like to play games to? (Answer!)
A. I mostly play FPS story-line driven games. The music for these games in the past few years has become such a part of the experience that I just leave the music up to the game. I can remember though - in the old Quake days - throwing on some Foo Fighters and going to town!

Q. Do you feel relationships within games are meaningful? (Answer!)
A. Absolutely. Shared experience based on common interest is a great bonding mechanism.

Q. How do you feel about selling virtual items for real money? (Do NOT advertise RMT services!) (Answer!)
A. I find it valid. People find value in all sorts of things. And - sometimes virtual items take quite a bit of effort to achieve.

Q. If you could meet any game developer, who would it be? (Answer!)
A. I've met Warren Spector. He explained to me the details of Deus Ex at e3 back in 1999. He was a very warm, intelligent, enthusiastic guy. I hope they're all like that.

Q. When you are not playing games, what do you do for fun? (Answer!)
A. Draw & paint, play guitar, various outdoor activities, play with my son, read, and surf that Web thingy.

Q. What sort of players annoy you the most? (Answer!)
A. Players with poor sportsmanship. You know who you are.

Q. Other than your console or PC, what is the piece of hardware you can't live without? (Answer!)
A. My buttery headphones. Theres nothing like crisp clear audio to get you immersed in the game.

Q. Ninjas or pirates? (Answer!)
A. Ninjas

Q. How many hours a week do you play? (Answer!)
A. 10-20

Q. In real life, are you male or female? (Answer!)
A. Male

Q. Do you use voice chat? (Answer!)
A. Yes, but only when absolutely needed

Q. What experience do you have beta-testing games? (Answer!)
A. I'm not worthy!

Q. What are the specs on your gaming rig? (Answer!)
A. 24" iMac. You hate me... I know. But I can tell you that I use BootCamp to run Windows and I've played many PC games so far with zero glitches. Crysis, for example, plays without a single hitch.

Q. Beside GamerDNA, what are your favorite websites? (Answer!)
A. Wired, Last.fm, coulorlovers.com, conceptart.org, behance.com - and a number of obscure design-oriented sites/blogs I visit on a regular basis.

Q. What is a feature you would like added to GamerDNA? (Answer!)
A. A community section that promotes all its amazing members... and I'll tell you - it's on the drawing board. Can't wait to launch it!

Q. Why do you join guilds or clans? (Answer!)
A. Because there's power in numbers!
