Buyer guide
Determine the purpose of your monitor:
The very first thing one should consider before buying a monitor is the purpose. There are different types of monitors available designed for gaming, professional works like graphic design, photography and general monitors for home and office. If you need a monitor for gaming then you should look for the ones with higher refresh rate like 144 Hz or 165 Hz and lower response time like 1ms or 4ms. For professional graphic designing or photography you should go for the monitor that offer more color accuracy and higher pixel density for sharp texture. For general use like home or office one must go for the monitor offering nice contrast ration and brightness.
Panel technology used:
There are in general 3 types of panel technology used in monitors; they are VA, IPS and TN.
The TN is the fastest in performance so used for gaming monitors and are cheapest monitors also. TN technology has low input lag, low response rate and highest refresh rate making is ideal for pro-gaming. But the viewing angles are worst with not so good color accuracy.
The IPS panels are most expensive and these monitors are used by professional photographers, graphic designers, movie makers etc for the color depth accuracy and image quality. The best thing about this type is the color and viewing angles. The response time is slow and refresh rate is average.
The VA panel is average and comes in between TN and IPS panels. The colors are good with average refresh rate and the response time. It offers best image depth and best contrast. Now many gaming monitors also use VA panels for the best image quality.
Resolution of monitor
The resolution of a monitor is determined by the pixel contain in a monitor by length x width format. There are 3 types of monitor resolution in general. They are 4K or UHD (3840 x 2160p), 2K or QHD (1980 x 1440p) and FHD (1980 x 1080p). Generally pro-gamers who play high FPS games require 4k or UHD monitors otherwise 2k and QHD monitors are also great for gaming and professionals. It depends on the user which kind of monitor they prefer for their computers. Moreover one should consider the GPU unit compatibility with the monitor they are about to buy. It will be better to go with higher resolution if the size of the monitor is 27 inch or more.
Response Time
The lower response time the better the image quality you get in your games. Response time means the time taken by the monitor to change the pixel color. For gamers it will best to go with monitors offering lesser response time as this will reduce motion blur in fast paced games. The fastest response time is 0.5-1 millisecond and slowest is 4-5 milliseconds.
Refresh Rate
For professionals and normal users 60 Hz is more than enough but for a gamer, a monitor must have 75 Hz or more refresh rate for better image quality in heavy games. Most gaming monitors offer minimum 144 Hz refresh rate.
Ergonomic features provided
These features are height adjustment, swivel, pivoting and tilt adjustments which are provided by the monitors for comfortable usability. Tilt adjustment is common and provided in every monitor, height adjustment facility is also provided in most monitors. But the swivel and pivoting facility are the rarely provided. Only the expensive monitors are providing all ergonomic features together. So check the features you require in your monitor and buy accordingly.
Bit depth
If you are a professional and your work is color oriented then you must go with at least 10-12 bit depth for best color output on your monitor. Most monitor offers 8 bit depth in color. Do check this aspect before selecting your monitor.
Free sync and G-Sync
This feature is provided in every gaming monitor for better synchronization with GPUs and thus reducing screen tear, stuttering and flickering. Free sync is provided in monitors for AMD GPU units and G-sync is provided in monitors for Nvidia GPU units. Each monitor is equipped with either of this technology, so you must select the monitor depending on the GPU unit you already have or plan to get.
Price range
Nothing more to say about the price range, this aspect totally depends on the buyer’s preference and budget limitations. The more you pay the better you get policy applies here as well because quality has predominance over the price.
