GPU Architecture & CUDA Cores

Both cards RTX 2060 and RTX 2070 using the same Nvidia Turing architecture with 12 nm FinFET process.

The RTX 2070 comes with 2304 CUDA cores, 36 RT and 288 Tensor cores making it a powerful GPU unit.

On the other hand, the RTX 2060 comes with 1920 CUDA cores, 30 RT and 240 Tensor Cores.

The RTX 2060 has slight cuts in terms of cores but the performance has not down sided accordingly. The shading units and Texture mapping units are a little bit higher on the RTX 2070 compared to the RTX 2060. The RTX 2070 can run moderate to high-end games from 1080p/1440p to 4K resolution whereas the RTX 2060 can run high-end games in 1080p to 1440p resolution without any issues but you might face frame lag on the 4k resolution.

Clock Speed

As there is very little difference in the cores of both the GPU units, the clocking speeds also have small difference. The highest GPU core clock speed of RTX 2070 is 1410 MHZ. The RTX 2060s GPU clock can speed up-to 1365MHz.

In terms of boost clock the RTX 2060 has scored 1680 MHZ leaving behind the RTX 2070 who scored 1620 MHZ.

Memory clock speed is almost same in both the devices and can range up to 14000 MHZ.

Memory (VRAM)

The memory type used in both RTX 2070 and RTX 2060 is the latest DDR6. The RTX 2070 comes with a memory size of 8 GB (8192 MB) where as the RTX 2060 model comes with 6 GB (6144 MB) memory size. The difference of 2 GB in memory is a big margin and here the RTX 2070 gets a huge power up in terms running of heavy games without frame drops or lags. Moreover the bandwidth of RTX 2070 is 448 GB/s which is greater than 336 GB/s of the RTX 2060. The memory bus of RTX 2070 is 256 bit and the 192 bit for RTX 2060. The L2 cache of RTX 2070 is 4096 KB.

It is clear that in terms of VRAM the RTX 2070 holds a clear upper hand.

Power Consumption

The power consumption of RTX 2070 is 175W to 185W and it requires 550W of Power Supply Unit. The power consumption of RTX 2060 is 160W to 165W which is slightly lower than the previous one and it requires 500W of power supply units. The more consumption of electricity by RTX 2070 is due to the extra cores and extra 2 GB of VRAM.

Temperature and Fan Noise

The highest temperature recorded of RTX 2070 is 79 Celsius with 49-51 dB fan sound at 100% fan speed and of RTX 2060 is 72 Celsius at 45-47 dB of sound at full speed. The cooling systems of both the units are very good and designed to provide the needed support.

Frame per Second (FPS)

The RTX 2070 has an average rate of 126.3 FPS on 1080p resolution, 92.3 FPS on 1440p Ultra graphics settings and 56.5 FPS on 2160p (4K) settings.

The RTX 2060 has less VRAM so it is supposed to give lower FPS rate compared to the RTX 2070 but the result is not disappointing. It has an average of 112.7 FPS rate on 1080p settings, 78.6 FPS on 1440p settings and 46.2 FPS on 2160p (4k) settings.

Additional Features

Both the units use DirectX 12. They have same PCIe interface. Both the GPU cards are made VR ready, come with Vulcan API, uses OpenGL 4.5 and enabled with NVIDIA G-Sync. These units are equipped with DLSS and support Real Time Ray Tracing for superior in-game performance.

Performance

There is no doubt that both RTX 2070 and RTX 2060 are tremendous GPU cards in terms of performance and stability. But the RTX 2070 holds an upper hand in terms of gaming 4K resolution between this two. With extra memory and video rendering capacity the RTX 2070 performs well enough compared to RTX 2060. Although RTX 2060 is behind in performance with 4k resolution but in terms of 1080p and 1440p resolution settings it gives neck to neck competition when tried on most AAA games.

Pricing

The prices of both the cards are different in countries but there is a basic difference of $150 to $200 between RTX 2070 and RTX 2060. The price of RTX 2060 ranges in between $350 to $400 whereas the RTX 2070 ranges from $550 to $600.

Conclusion

After going over all aspects of both the GPU cards it is certain that both the units are full of power, performance and designed to provide the gamers full entertainment and heavenly experience.

The RTX 2070 seems to have risen to the occasion with extra 2 GB of VRAM, extra CUDA cores, extra RT and extra Tensor cores providing decent performance in 4k resolution. But if you play games in 1080p and 1440p and not overly fond of 4K then the RTX 2060 is the best value for money GPU card available in the market. Moreover, it can also match the limits of RTX 2070 if highly over-clocked.

Bottom line, go for with RTX 2060 if you want the best budget GPU card for gaming 1080p and 1440p resolutions. And if you are a hardcore gaming enthusiast, likes 4K and wishes to keep up to race of upgrading games then you must go for the RTX 2070.

  1. Damn, so basically the 2070 performs 15-20% better but costs 40% more than the 2060. The 2060 really is the best bang-for-the-buck graphics card atm, can’t wait for the amd announcements though

  2. The 2070 costs 40% more than the 2060? Are you looking at launch prices? Because as of now that is not true. The 2070 should cost only $50 more than the 2060.

  3. Great article. Was looking at new video laptop for my son in college. Was reviewing the Alienware m51 and has a choice of 2060, 2070, 2080. They don’t offer 4K display. Do I bother with 2070? I was told it’s easy to upgrade the components with this new machine. Plus a good workout at 8.5lbs
