Gaming Motherboard Buying Guide – Guide To Choose A Best Gaming Motherboard

In this section I will be talking about how to buy the best motherboard for gaming. Many things you need to consider before buying a motherboard. Here I will be discussing about the major points that you have to consider and check.

Platform (Intel or AMD)

Chipset:

Before buying a motherboard for upgrading your system or build a new one, make sure you check the peripherals like RAM, SSD, GPU etc are compatible with the processor or chipset. Suppose you have an AMD X470 chipset but you have bought a motherboard that supports Intel processor and vice versa then you will have a total loss. Most Intel Chipsets are of Z390 and AMD processors are of X470 series. Basically the chipset socket provided determines which processor can be installed in the motherboard. For gaming it is better to have chipsets that can be over-clocked. Over clocking chipsets are denoted by “k”.

Socket:

Just like chipsets motherboard support different sockets for Intel and AMD processors. For Intel processors LGA1151 sockets are used and for AMD platform AM4 socket is being used in motherboards.

Budget

Before buying a gaming motherboard it is very important to set a specific budget because it will be pointless to search random motherboards that are not fitting in your budget. After deciding a range you can then choose a motherboard according to the features you are looking for. Gaming motherboards can be divided into three categories according to the budget:

Lower-end motherboard (up-to $130): Motherboards for gaming in this range are available on both AMD and Intel platforms. But over-clocking motherboards in this range are available for AMD processors and not for Intel Cores. Gaming motherboards in this range are decent performers but don’t offer additional features like onboard WI-FI or RGB etc.

Medium motherboard (up to $130 to $200): In this range, you will find motherboards with AMD X470 chipset and Intel’s Z370 chipset with overclocking and a lot of features like RGB, onboard WI-FI, M.2 slots, etc. These boards are designed for performance, stability, and features to satisfy moderate to high-end gamers.

High-end motherboard (up-to $200 and above): High-end motherboards OR Flagship boards are designed for extreme over-clocking and pro-gamers or gaming enthusiasts. These motherboards feature every possible feature for hardcore gaming and make your gaming experience heavenly. If you want the greatest output from high-end AMD processors or Intel’s i9 9900k or i7 9700k you would require a powerful motherboard.

Bottom-line is you should choose a board that has features you require or you can utilize. Mere buying a costly or cheap board that doesn’t satisfy your needs is a total waste of money.

Form Factor (Size)

Form factor is another important aspect that has to be kept in mind. Form factor means the size of the motherboard, it determines the factor how many components can the board install in it. More the size more ports and slots for installing GPUs, Ram, SATA Ports or PCIe. The cheaper motherboards have size. The case size also depends on this form factor. Moreover you can have more USB ports on bigger motherboards which come in real handy.

Mini ITX: It is the smallest size of a motherboard having dimensions 9.0 x 7.5 inches. With this board you will require a small chassis but you can only 1 expansion slot, 2 RAM slots, only 1 GPU and up-to 6 SATA ports. Generally you have to sacrifice the advanced features.

Micro ATX: It has a dimension of 9.6 x 9.6 inches and is of medium size. In this size you can have 4 expansion slots, up-to 4 RAM slots, up-to 3 GPUs and up-to 8 SATA ports.

ATX: It is the standard size of best gaming motherboards offering lot of features and has dimensions of 12 x 9.6 inches. It offers up-to 7 expansion slots, up-to 8 RAM slots, up-to 4 GPUs and up-to 12 SATA ports.

E-ATX: It is the extended form of ATX motherboards having dimensions of 12 x 13 inches. This form factors is generally used in mothers that supports dual processors.

Unless you love small PC or have low budget it is better to go with the standard ATX format.

Memory:

Most of the standard gaming motherboards supports minimum of 4 RAM DIMM ports and some have more and some have less. All these motherboards are compatible with DDR4 RAM. For moderate to hardcore gaming 16 to 32 GB of RAM is enough. In these motherboards the maximum of 64 GB of RAM can be used. Using the memory DIMMs depends on how you want to utilize them, you can use two 16GB DIMMs or one 32 GB or for more you can use two 32 GB etc.

Graphics:

Graphics is a very important part for gaming PCs. Most Intel core processors and AMD processors come with integrated GPU but that is not enough for extreme gaming. So you would require GPU units to run heavy games with smoothness. These graphics cards are installed in compatible PCIe slots such as x1, x4, x8 and x16. X16 is the most common. So make sure that you are buying the motherboard compatible to your GPU unit and vice versa.

GPU Supports:

For multiple GPU there are two options Nvidia 2 way SLI and Crossfire by AMD. You should choose the motherboard depending upon which kind of GPU will satisfy your gaming.

Storage:

Storage system has now evolved with the invention of SSDs which offer more space with faster data transfer rate using M.2 but are also expensive too. HDDs are good for storage as they are cheap. It is better to have both HDD for storage and SSDs for OS and applications. These are connected by SATA ports mainly SATA 3.0. Moreover new NVMe SSDs are connected through PCIe slots.

LAN & Onboard Wifi:

Standard Gigabit Ethernet (LAN) port is common in most motherboards but having an onboard WI-FI is very useful for gaming because online gaming or live video streaming requires heavy internet bandwidth, which an Ethernet/LAN connection may not always provide. So it is better to have both options in your hand. The latest Wi-Fi can provide connectivity up-to 1.73 GB/s.

Audio:

Most gaming motherboards offers HD audio which works just fine for gaming but if you are an audiophile or then you must look for the motherboards offering powerful audio codec that provides immersive sound through headphones or speakers.

BIOS:

BIOS is the basic input out output system that controls boot sequence, and control the other attributes before your OS starts up. In some motherboards BIOS chips are removal. In high end over-clocking motherboards instead of BIOS the new UEFI (unified extendible firmware interface) BIOS is used. It is the latest update of BIOS which allows more control over over-clocking, rotation of fan headers for system cooling.

Expansion Slots:

The most commonly available expansion slots are PCIe x1 for SATA expansion and x16 used for GPU, SSDs etc. If you are keen on installing multiple GPUs or expansion drives it is better to have motherboards offering more PCIe slots.

Ports:  Apart from the expansion slots you should check the front panel of the motherboard for the following ports which are very useful for daily operations or gaming.

USB 2.0: These ports are slow for data transfer but can be used for plugging in keyboards or mice and other components. Most of the ports offered are of this kind.

USB 3.0, USB 3.1 Gen 1 & USB 3.1 Gen 2: All these ports are provided in few numbers. USB 3.1 Gen 2 ports are faster than other ports offering up-to 10 Gbps bandwidth but all devices doesn’t support this port. On the other hand the USB 3.0, 3.1 Gen 1 offer decent speed and works with almost every device.

USB Type-C: These ports can be of USB 3.1 Gen 1/ Gen 2 and are provided one or two in most motherboards for connecting the mobile phones or other latest devices.

Audio ports: For connecting speakers and headphones these ports are provided.

Thunderbolt 3: Very few motherboards offer this port. It is the fastest USB type C connector port offering speed of 40 Gb/s. This is the most versatile port offered in any motherboard.

DVI-D, HDMI, and Display Port: These ports are given video output for those who use integrated graphics.

Additional Features: Some additional features that you may look for in your motherboard are over-clocking generator button, CMOS clear buttons, RGB lighting LEDS and LED diagnostic readouts.

Here we have tried to give idea about what you should look for in your motherboard before upgrading or buying a new PC for gaming. We hope this article will help you find the right gaming motherboard for your PC.

Conclusion

All these mentioned motherboards are equally unique in their own ways; it depends on your usage pattern, personal brand preference, features you want and monetary limit which will be the best gaming motherboard for your gaming PC. Buy the best motherboard which will satisfy your gaming needs.
